The Bureau’s ‘needs and leads’ events – What is it?

Giving back to your community is a great way in which you both grow as a person, and facilitate growth in others by leveraging your unique skill set and life experiences. People give back to their community in many different ways. From volunteering and donating, to teaching a skill or even hosting an event, the possibilities are endless. In whichever way you choose, one thing is clear; each time we do so, it gives us a sense of purpose and satisfaction afterwards.

Another way to give back to the community is by supporting one’s personal growth. The Bureau Business Center (The Bureau Dubai) focuses on making its members aware of the importance of community support and forming meaningful relationships in the coworking space. Don’t just take it from us, a Harvard longitudinal study concluded that community and healthy relationships enrich our lives and help us live longer and happier. Robert Waldinger, PHD at Harvard said in his Ted Talk “loneliness kills, so I try to pay more attention to my relationships than I used to.”

In this loneliness epidemic, and with a lack of socialization and work, both women and men are craving community and meaningful communication. With this exact goal in mind, one of the ways The Bureau Dubai is looking to achieve this is through hosting our monthly internal ‘needs and leads’ events. The focus of this article is to discuss what it is, the importance of such a process, and how it works for personal and professional growth.

One of our founders, Rhea Patel, when asked about its importance stated: “the purpose is to share your problem and get a direct reference or resource, without beating around the bush! Everyone is attending with an expectation to offer something if they can, which is so nice”.

So without beating around the bush, what is a needs and leads event?

A needs and leads event is as the name suggests: expressing your need, and hopefully getting a lead to connect you with it!
Let’s give an example. Say you are a new business owner who is looking to grow their social media following and start creating content. You want to outsource this as it’s not your area of expertise, however, you’re not really sure where to start! Some setbacks you may face:
a) You are not sure who would be the right person to address – a marketing firm? A social media content creator? A graphics designer? 

b)You don’t know where to look with the plethora of options available – fiver? Upwork? Instagram? (so many options!)

C) Or even who to go to – what can be an easy way you can get help for this?

As a Bureau Dubai member, the needs and leads event will then be a perfect coworking place to do that! It’s like a circle of extremely cool men and women (everyone is in our space!), with different skill sets and expertise, who either have the potential to help you with what you need, or help offer someone else they know which have the expertise you are looking for! So in short, it creates a form of symbiosis, between all members in the space.

What are some of the advantages of a needs and leads event?

  • Networking 
This will be the perfect opportunity to exchange information and develop professional and/or social contacts. Needs and leads can also be used to collaborate with one another. It’s a great way that promotes collaboration, and not competition. We believe in the power of uplifting one another, rather than leaving our team mates behind. Meeting new people is a great way to get out of your comfort zone as well! Interacting with The Bureau members who have diverse professional backgrounds also gives you the opportunity to practice your verbal communication and interactive skills.
 
  • Meeting new & finding the right people – oh hello, cool stranger!

It’s good to get out there and hear different opinions and perspectives from others. Our conversations with new people can provide us with takeaways – we might learn something new or get a fresh perspective. As mentioned above, it’s not only about getting a lead (although that’s the goal). From new adventures to support, it’s also about forming meaningful connections with people. As the Harvard study showed, meeting new people might make your co-working experience even more happy and positive!

  • Asking without hesitation 

Lastly, but definitely not least, one of the charms of these events (if not its most important aspect), is the ability to ask for something without feeling shy or reserved. We all know that cringe feeling we get when we want to ask someone for a favor or request. The needs and leads event encourages people to not feel shy about asking for what they need, on the contrary, it was created to do exactly that! We are really all about helping people grow to their maximum capacity and potential, and blossom in our space. Where else can you do that?
